Start with the conditions
Consider sunlight, moisture, abrasion and cleaning products. A material suitable for a bedroom may perform differently at an entrance or near a wet area. Ask suppliers for technical information relevant to the intended use.
Compare real samples
Look at samples under daylight and the proposed artificial lighting. Place them next to neighbouring materials and inspect edges, texture and joints. Small samples can hide variation in larger installations.
Discuss replacement and care
Ask how a finish is maintained and whether replacement stock can be obtained. For a business, include service access and downtime in the decision. Initial cost is only one part of the comparison.
Record the approved specification
Document the manufacturer, product, finish, sample and installation detail. Clear specifications make procurement and site review more reliable than an image reference alone.
